Rideau maps the real fundraisers for the shops looted in France on 17 October
Paris, October 21, 2026
On 17 October 2026, shops were looted and wrecked in Paris, Lyon, Lille, Nice, Bordeaux, Marseille, Nantes, Reims, Grenoble, Montpellier, Rouen, Toulouse, Avignon, Nancy, Rennes, Limoges, Tours, Annecy, Besançon, Brest, Caen, Elbeuf, Le Mans, Lorient, Metz, Nîmes, Poitiers, Quimper and Saint-Denis. In the days that followed, support fundraisers multiplied online, and fake ones with them: links opened in the name of shopkeepers who had asked for nothing.
Rideau (rideau.help) puts the shops that were hit and their real fundraisers on one map. So far: 129 shops in 29 cities, 14 verified fundraisers and €166,112 raised from 10,438 contributions (amounts read on October 21, 2026). The largest, for Lycamobile (boutique de Hassan) in Paris, stands at €94,932.
Every fundraiser is checked by hand before it is published: either the shopkeeper started it or shares it on their own channels, or a newsroom vouches for it. Every entry cites its sources, and when in doubt, nothing is published.
Rideau collects no money and takes no commission: every button leads straight to the fundraising platform. The site is free, ad-free, in ten languages, and its data is open (CSV and JSON, CC BY 4.0 licence).
A shopkeeper whose fundraiser is missing, or a neighbour who knows of one, can report it at rideau.help/en/signaler/. A wrong or outdated entry is corrected the same way.
Rideau was started by Gwendall Esnault, a Paris-based creator working between art and tech (gwendall.com), who runs Kami Robotics, an AI and robotics lab in Paris. In late 2012, a year before French Tech was born, he launched Paris Tech List, a free, collaborative map of the Paris tech ecosystem that within weeks became its meeting point, with more than 370 members, built in a weekend with no advertising and no paywall, as La Tribune reported at the time (Marina Torre, 9 January 2013). Same principle here: a public good, run by volunteers, with no middleman.
